I never thought I would say this, but I think I'm turning into a redneck.
My whole life, I have skirted the fact that I am a native Texan and that I live behind a cotton field. I've always been attracted to other parts of the world and have always been repulsed by the ignorant, conservative bliss that my fellow West Texans share. If my dad changed the radio station to country, I would immediately change it to something more hip. But, the most horrible thing was when people asked if kids from Texas all ride horses to school and wear cowboy boots..um, NOO.
Well, for some reason, I have been drawn back to my country roots. When I'm driving home from work, I find myself listening to George Strait and Darius Rucker (and I know the words!). I also just bought a pair of cowboy boots to go country dancing in. The scariest part is my embracing of the word "ya'll".
For nineteen years, I have worked so hard to separate myself from this part of my upbringing. But, I guess there's no way around it- I'm a redneck at heart, and there's nothing my cultural curiosity can do about it.
